What is new in SW 2003?

Next meeting - Wednesday March 5, 2003

Meeting summary

36 people attended the first meeting of NEWSUG at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College. Attendees filled-up a registration form with their contact information and selected three main topics for future meetings.

After a short introduction from Mark Achtner from Miller electric, everybody introduced himself or herself. The charter for the group was handed out and any comments suggestions and corrections were and are welcomed. Elections were facilitated, in which Moshe Saraf was elected to be the President of the group. Bob Braun and Mark Achtner were elected to serve as board members.

After a short break, Greg Jankowski presented “What is new in SW 2003?”. Greg started by recommending all SW users to subscribe to SW Express, http://www.solidworks.com/swexpress/index.html . During the presentation, SW giveaways were handed out for every question asked. Other giveaways were available by CATI and Graphic System. Main notes, questions, and answers are listed below.

What is new in SW 2003?

·        250 enhancements

·        More tutorials

·        User defined folders – a folder can be created in the FeatureManager design tree. Group of features or components can be placed in a folder. Suppress or hide all the features or components in a folder can be controlled by applying the action desired to the folder.

·        It is recommended to name every feature with unique feature name. To do that, have “Name feature on creation” in the System Options checked.

·        Roll back options – some of the options are “Roll to previous” and “Roll to end.”

·        Configuration enhancements – bi-directional design

Question: Can you change a dimension name from the design table?

Answer: No. It is still not possible.

·        Macro function in feature manager

·        Performance enhancement

Ø      Partition roll back

Ø      Interrupt regeneration (by pressing the escape key)

Ø      Incremental graphics

Ø      Graphics performance

Ø      Large assembly – can rebuild one component only

Ø      Rapid draft/view

·        Part sketch enhancements

Ø      Auto dimension

Ø      Multiple solid bodies

Question: How would I know if the part has a disjoint?

Answer: When looking at the top of the tree, check the number of solid bodies in the solid bodies’ folder.

·        Ability to share sketches between features

Question: Will you see the lines in a part with disjointed solids (as you would see if you cross section a weldment)?

Answer: Yes

Question: Can you insert another part as a solid into a disjoint solid?

Answer: Yes.

Question: What will be the mass of two solid bodies in the Mass Properties?

Answer: The Mass Properties will give you the option on each body or both.

Question: Is the Mass Properties show a greater density when the two solids overlay?

Answer: No. The mass properties will count only one volume out of the two.

·        Sheet metal

Ø      Square to round – need to have at least sheet thickness at corners.

Ø      Section should be open at reasonable locations.

·        Part

Ø      Full round fillet

Ø      Feature Statistics screen – a summary of the feature and the amount of resources that they take.

Question: Can you suppress a feature from the Feature Statistics screen?

Answer: Yes.

Ø      Cancel or stop regeneration by pressing the escape key.

·        Surfacing

Ø      Untream

Ø      Fill Surface – a surface can be created by highlighting the surfaces’ edges and selecting Fill Surface.

·        Cosmos Express

Ø      Limited to linear and static analysis

Ø      It is not a FEA software, but can give a designer a quick feedback for material selection, physical constraints, and loads.

·        Supplier Certified 3-D content – sharing files and reducing remodeling existing components.

·        Assemblies in pallet part

·        Replacing an assembly with a part

Question: Can you have assemblies that are flexible (i.e. pneumatic cylinder) in a pallet parts?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Can you lock some dimensions of a library feature?

Answer: Yes.

·        Simulation – a simple dynamic simulation that have limited actuation selection

·        Drawing enhancements

Ø      Symmetrical pattern in center lines

Ø      Drawing view template

Ø      AutoCAD capabilities

Ø      Centerlines are inserted automatically

Question: Do the centerlines show in hidden features?

Answer: Yes.

·        SW Utilities – can compare between two files of a part (from different revisions)

Question: How much RAM is recommended?

Answer: To check the amount of RAM on Windows XP, open all the applications that are usually open when SW is used (Outlook, Excel, Word, Explorer, etc.) and press Ctrl+Alt+Delete. On the Performance tab, check the available physical memory in the physical memory box (figure 1). Greg noted that buying more RAM memory is a very small investment that will return itself within days if not hours.
